A Dog’s Deal

The problem with being a dog

is the loyalty you invest

in two-legged friends who walk around

wearing clothes, shouting into mobile

phones, is only reciprocated

when they’re around.  Because they are

important, they leave you alone

more often than you like, unlike

the other dogs you love and know,

fellow prisoners of love,

domesticated slaves all too happy

to heel, to sit, to stay,

or, if you prefer,

roll over and play dead.

    • thanks, susanne! sorry i didn’t see your comment with the billy collins poems till now. i’ve been on vacation–both from work and from blogging. i like the way he turns the whole “man’s best friend” idea on its head in the second poem.
