All Systems Go

Embrace the fake landscape

of twinkling rectangles,

headlights that glitter,

an electrical river.  Stare

into eyes of a model

in a poster, the one who

looks through you

at the soul of success.

Or else screw your eyes

to the screen on the phone

and stream scrambled sounds

in your ears as you speed

down the tracks laid deep

in the earth that lead you

along the limits of your life.

Rush from one terminal

to the next, gobble meals

from a vending machine.

Read through the South Pole’s

piecemeal collapse,

the ocean’s unsurprising rise;

watch the trailer for Godzilla,

Hollywood’s answer

to planetary agony.

If you move fast enough

from one moment to another

and fill your face with enough

flying facts, you’ll forget how

it feels to be a slave

swallowed slowly and whole

by a murderous monster

with an appetite as large

as the darkness in your heart.

Terrific. Terribly terrific and terrifying, too. Great line, Stew.
