My Last Day in School

I sit at my desk, alert,

echo of orange juice and toothpaste

mingling on my tongue,

digestive avalanche of buttered

toast and soft-boiled egg

coursing through my tummy

(compliments of Mommy).

I have come to learn how

to read and write, how to add,

divide, subtract, and multiply.

How to sing, create, climb a rope,

and get along with my classmates

without too many black eyes

or bloody noses.

I did not come here to die.
